making room.
life can get really intense sometimes.
objectively speaking.
unmistakably so.
and sometimes,
ever so sneakily,
in ways more covert,
born from the stories we build from within.
this is due in part to the prefrontal cortex.
the remarkable structure of our brains
that grants us the ability
to conjure realities,
entertain hypotheticals,
and inhabit what-ifs of our own making.
however well-intentioned this capacity is,
when left unchecked,
it can create immense suffering.
we can get caught in loops of thinking,
spirals of overanalysis,
bracing for danger that may never arrive,
until the mind's momentum
spills into the body:
a tension,
a tightness,
a fatigue,
a heavy haze that blurs our vision and
leaves us worn thin,
running ragged.
a cycle that can feel
so very hard to break.
it is in these moments especially
that we might benefit from a reminder.
a soft whisper of
maybe it's not that serious.
of course, discernment matters.
offered at the wrong time
or to the wrong situation,
this phrase can feel dismissive.
a minimizing of what's been endured,
a premature lightness
that fails to honor the weight at hand.
after all,
there are moments when intensity
is absolutely appropriate,
necessary,
even protective.
sometimes what feels intense
is a meaningful response
to something that genuinely matters.
but there are also moments
when we are maximizing,
magnifying,
catastrophizing,
falling susceptible to emotional reasoning,
letting feelings dictate perspective,
letting something small swell
into something that feels
far too big,
far too much to handle,
far too much to hold.
in these moments,
this gentle reminder
becomes an antidote.
it widens the lens
when tunnel vision sets in.
it interrupts the mind
as it narrows around harrowing possibilities
that may never come to pass.
when well-timed,
it acts as an elixir.
a shift from the survival instinct's narrow view
into something broader,
more spacious,
more balanced.
a dose of levity
wherever we notice misplaced urgency or depth.
a softening of the reins.
a recalibration toward what is manageable,
workable,
clearer.
and from this place,
something subtle but vital becomes possible.
a loosening.
a breath.
a small return to ourselves.
not because nothing matters,
but because not everything
has to matter this much.
not because the moment isn't real,
but because the mind
does not always tell the truth
about the size of the moment.
sometimes,
we can let a thing
be a thing.
we can meet it
without making it bigger.
without making it smaller.
without asking it to become
more than it is.
and maybe that is what
maybe it's not that serious
was offering us all along:
not dismissal,
not denial,
but perspective.
a little more room
between what happens
and what we make of it.
a little more space to breathe.
a little more permission
to return to what is here,
as it is.
and from there,
we can begin again.
